From the Bottom Up: Strategies for Building a Loyal Customer Base

Regardless of whether you run a small, local business or a multi-country enterprise, building a loyal customer base is an important piece of running a successful business. If you are just starting out, or if you need to bolster your customer base, here are some ideas for connecting with and keeping those customers.

Connect with customers on a personal level.
Regardless of the size of your business, customers appreciate and even demand the personal touch when you are doing business with them. If you are a small business, this can be as easy as knowing the customer’s name. If your company is a little larger, don’t despair. Even a large company can find ways to connect to individual customers: Amazon, for example, keeps track of customer purchases and suggests other similar items that might appeal to them.

Reward them for their loyalty.
Once you have done business with a customer even once, you should find ways to reward them and encourage them to come back. Many companies use reward programs, coupons, or special sneak peeks to customers who repeat their business.

Ask for their suggestions.
One way to demonstrate that you value customers is to ask for their suggestions. Give them the opportunity to give feedback, or even to have some say in the new and exciting things that are happening in the company.

These suggestions may not be for you, your business, or your customers. Feel free to try them out, and come up with solutions of your own. Regardless of which means you use, remember that truly connecting with the customer and showing them that you value their business and their loyalty is the most important piece of building a loyal customer base.
