Within the busy business world, cultural competence is an important piece of your business repertoire, especially if you are beginning to conduct business on an international scale. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “cultural competence” is basically a means of smoothly and considerately interacting (professionally or personally) with individuals who were raised in a different culture than your own. Here are some important pieces of information to remember when trying to become culturally competent.
Do your research.
Learn something about the culture group with which you will be doing business. Information should always be your first step, but make sure it is from a reputable source. Biased or even racist information will do you no favors.
Seek out a cultural guide.
Along the same lines as conducting research, you should seek out people who have some personal familiarity or experience with the culture with which you are now interacting. If you know someone who was raised in the culture with which you will soon be doing business, he or she can serve as a great guide for you.
Watch your language, and generally avoid jokes.
In any kind of verbal interaction, be sure to choose your words carefully. Slang terms or idioms often do not carry over into other languages and cultures. The same goes for humor. Each culture has its own idea of what is funny. Don’t assume that what your culture finds hilarious will translate flawlessly.
Remember that you have a culture, too.
Do not get too caught up in the idea that you have to adapt to the preferences of another culture. You also need to recognize that you are part of a specific culture group as well, one that influences how you see the world. Being more aware of your own culture’s customs is an important aspect of being culturally competent.
As borders become easier to cross, and business becomes more global, being a culturally competent world citizen will become increasingly important. As long as you approach the situation with respect and understanding, you will be sure to weather any difficulties that may arise.
